2/26/2022 Weigh In

OK then. Hi there. It has been awhile.

In 2020, I began the Optavia program and I successfully got down to 168 pounds (yay! That's a "normal" BMI of 24.8 for me!).

I have lapsed again. Thank goodness, I've caught myself before I get back over 200 pounds, but today I'm at 190.25, which is a BMI that is "overweight," but not "obese" (the BMI number is 28.1 ... ugh). So today I start with my old friend the Diet Center's diet as described in my old Diet Center books. Diet Center has changed since I was there in the early 1980s, but the program they had then has always worked to peel the pounds off of me and it will work again ... as long as I remain accountable.

This is my accountability blog. And yes, I will share it with my therapist this time.

Weight gain is brought on by eating too many calories for my metabolism to handle. I know this. I get it. I understand that. I've known this for a lifetime. But oh, those extra calories taste sooooo GOOD going in. I love to eat. It's almost a sexual release I get from putting food down my gullet. I love to eat carbs. I love to have honey in my tea. I love cookies and buttery crackers and cakes and pies and pastries and chocolate. All that (except for cocoa powder, which has 5 calories/tbsp) has to go.

I can figure out how many calories something contains by reading the label. I know this. I get it. I understand that. I've known this since they started putting nutrition labels on food. I even know how to read a nutrition label.

I can add up the calories as compared with the nutrients each and every day. The goal is to maintain a 1000-1200 calorie per day intake of health-promoting foods. The Diet Center diet does that for me automatically and healthfully, which is why it works.

I can peel off the weight. I can avoid eating processed foods. I do not need to order pizza. I can eat protein and veggies. I can not put butter on bread. I can leave the honey jar in its place. I can make the Diet Center bran muffins (that recipe alone is worth all the money I paid to Diet Center back in the day). I can drink sufficient water. I can get a bit more active once my second hip replacement heals (until then I'm pretty much stuck with walking fairly slowly). I belong to the Y (thank goodness for Silver Sneakers), where I can swim and use the treadmill and lift weights to my heart's content. I can get my garden into shape this year (my hips will have healed enough for that by the time spring actually arrives in Upstate New York).

So. I can do all that. I can get myself down to 145 pounds (a BMI of 21.4); if I stick religiously to the program, the weight historically has come off at about 10 lb per month, which puts me at 145 in mid-July 2022. That's easy. Chicken 'n' fish, chicken 'n' fish, chicken 'n' fish. The challenge will, as ever, be maintaining the loss. Therein lies my lifelong downfall. So I need to fix that. That, of course, means I need to heal from all the emotional crap I live with and shedding the baggage. I need to get over the feeling that I'm worthless. I need to heal from the rape. I need to recover from all the bad relationships. I need to grow some self-worth. I can develop self-worth by looking at accomplishments rather than at failures (and yes, I have accomplished a lot over a lot of time, and I'm not done with that list). This year, I can develop self-worth by actually getting my private pilot's license (yes, I am learning to fly a plane ... and spending all my money in the process).

Sadly, some of my baggage can't be just dumped since the people who contributed to my emotional crap are, for the most part, dead or unreachable. But I can work to heal myself even without confronting them in person; I have a very active imagination and I can confront them and tell them of the damage they did and forgive them and release that damage in my own mind.

That's one place where my therapist and this blog can help.

Measurements. Let's get the starting point for this go-round.

1/5/2020 Weigh In

218.5, up 8 lb from 12/14/2019's 210.5.

I clearly relaxed the regimen during the holidays. The holidays are now OVER. It is time to restart the regimen. I shall tow the line.

Christmas is the death of the diet. It was last year, too. I didn't regain as much this year as I allowed myself to regain last year, but 8 lb in less than one month ... yeah, not good. I know what did it, of course. All that butter. All those biscuits and pie dough chunks. All that cream. Christmas is the Season of Fat.

Well, here we are, with those eight hard-lost pounds easily regained. It was not a problem at all to regain that weight.

I was reading about a weight-loss theory that involves confusing one's metabolism. I am well aware that weight loss involves slowing down the metabolism; that's why losing the tonnage is so miserably difficult. But this idea sort of makes sense. Diet strictly for x days, then on Day y eat more fats. Then diet again strictly for x days and eat more fats on Day y. Then diet strictly for x days and eat more fat on the Day Y. Basically, don't let the metabolism reset itself into starvation mode.

But I'm not likely to try it. The Diet Center has served me well for all these years; I'll just keep going with that.

I got myself a set of TRX straps for Christmas and I've actually been using them. They help with my hip pain, and they're good for strengthening muscles.

Today's Plan
11:00 Vitamins, water
1:30 Friendly's for brunch (I'll have a grilled cheese and soup, which is actually not unfriendly to the Diet), water
3:30 Wasa, water
4:30 Apple, water
5:30 Wasa, water
6:30 Chicken, spinach salad, water
8:00 Fruit, water
9:30 Yogurt, water

11/5/2019 Weigh In

215.25, down 0.25 from yesterday! Little bit by little bit...

I cannot sing the praises of the old Diet Center weight-loss diet highly enough. It works. I feel good while I'm on it. And the weight comes off at a healthy rate.

Diet Center has revamped its weight-loss diet, I believe; it's now online and not quite so regimented. Me, I like the old regimen. I don't need the online thing, I have done this and am doing it on my own, and I have no doubt that I will reach my goal weight.

However, I have a trip coming up; I'm off to London right after Thanksgiving. The eating regimen will be different for a week. I will take food with me on the plane for the trip so I don't eat airline food on the way over. I will get a lot of exercise while I'm there; I'm going to be walking around museums and around the streets of London doing the tourist stuff I've never done. I will, though, maintain control of my eating whilst there, but I will not kick myself for stalling or even gaining a bit over that week; I will simply return to the regimen when I get back.

Last year at the holidays, I said those very words and didn't follow through. I ate whatever I damn well pleased from November until October; the result was that I gained back 29 of the 50-something pounds I lost last year. I shall remember that, and not repeat the mistake.

Today's Plan:

Pre-breakfast: Lemon juice, vitamins
Breakfast: Bran pancake, strawberries, water
11 am: 5 minutes on NordicTrack, water
Lunch: Fish, salad, water
2 pm: Wasa, water
4 pm: Wasa, water
5 pm: 5 minutes on NordicTrack
Dinner: Chicken, salad, water
7 pm: 5 minutes on NordicTrack
7:30 pm: Apple, water
9:30 pm: Yogurt

10/21/2019 Weigh In

220.0. No change. Yet again.

This is still called a plateau. Frustration increases since I've been following my Plan and am still seeing no immediate results. If this happens again tomorrow, I'll do an egg-grapefruit day to kick the weight loss back into gear (gotta get some real, uncracked eggs for that; all I have are egg whites).

I'm on a panel, speaking tonight, so I need to vary my Plan just a bit.

Today’s Plan
Pre-breakfast: Lemon juice, vitamins
Breakfast: Bran pancake, water
10 a.m.: Strawberries, water
Lunch: Egg white and spinach scramble, water
2 p.m.: Wasa, water
4 p.m.: Wasa, water
Dinner: Chicken with Diet Center mayo, salad, water
9:30 p.m.: Yogurt with apple chunks in it (with cinnamon and stevia ... yum!), water

10/6/2019 Weigh In

229.0. Grumble.

When last I weighed myself, 11 months ago, I was 200.75. Clearly, I've slipped. My excuse (and that is EXACTLY what this is): Christmas happened. With eggnog cheesecake. Then I didn't go back onto the Plan. While Christmas will happen again, eggnog cheesecake won't.

It's time to get it back in gear and get this show on the road.

I started the Diet Center conditioning diet yesterday, and have one more day to go with that. Then it's chicken-and-fish, chicken-and-fish, chicken-and-fish forevermore.

I have a goal. I have Big Plans for next summer: I'm going to camp my way through the western National Parks. I'll start at probably the southern end with Grand Canyon, then drive up through the Rockies, hitting national parks along the way. I've gotten lots of recommendations for which parks to see; the Big Four on my list are Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain and Glacier. To do this effectively, I need to be at least 50 lb ... preferably 70 lb ... lighter than I am right now by the time my birthday rolls around in late June.

I Can Do This.

Weighing In 9/26/2018

207.5, down 1.25 lb from Monday's 208.75.

This is the result of the Team Darryl workout last night at the gym. That workout was hell on earth, but if it gives this result, I will gladly go through hell on earth. Actually, I paid $90 to go through hell on earth ... this team challenge lasts until mid-November ... by which time I hope to be down 20 lb from that 208.75 starting point. Let's see ... that would put me at 188.75. It will be a Great Day when I crack the 200-lb mark!!

And Darryl gave us homework. We are to find one thing to do to make the team challenge worth it. Me, I'm doing the Callanetics workout from the DVD I have. At least four days this week. I'll get it up to seven days each week by Week 3.

Oh ... I hurt today. My hip is killing me.

Hey ... I've lost over 50 lb since I started this in March 2017!! New cross-trainers for me!!!!! Yay!!!

And food is easy; just keep on with the Diet Center Reducing Diet. Easy enough.

Weighing In 9/22/2018

209.0, no change from yesterday.

That's no surprise. After two days of dramatic loss, it had to slow down to a mere crawl soon. The trick now is to stay the course.

That should be pretty easy today; I made bran muffins and the Diet Center tofu/apple dessert last night and I took tonight's chicken out of the freezer. I have the remains of the haddock I had for dinner a couple of nights ago in the fridge and will eat that for lunch today.

I give the Nancy Show this morning; that'll keep me out of trouble!

Weighing In 9/21/2018

209.0, down 0.5 from yesterday's 209.5.

That works!

That rate will, of course, slow down, but I'll take it for now.

Hey, one more pound and I will have lost 10 lb this month ... that's exactly what this Diet Center diet is supposed to do.

I started this journey on 3/14/2017 weighing 256 lb; in 3 more pounds, I will have lost 50 lb! I shall reward myself for that accomplishment with a new pair of cross-trainers.

The next 10-lb goal will take me down below 200 lb; that's a MILESTONE ... an absolutely magic number. I still need to figure out how to celebrate that one. I've already paid for the trip to Egypt, so that's not the reward. I'll figure it out.

Weighing In 9/13/2018

209.75. No change from yesterday.

I actually broke the diet regimen last night for dinner. I had Mick's maple salmon. The salmon is fine; the maple has SUGAR. Sugar is a total no-no on this regimen. Well, it's back to the straight and narrow today. Tomorrow I take my daughter and her boyfriend to Sushi X for lunch, then go to Concord for my law-school class reunion over the weekend. That, too, will break the regimen (though I will, of course, be sensible). So I'll do an egg-grapefruit day on Monday to get things back on track.

Going to the gym this morning to let Darryl beat me up and put me through the baseline exercise routine for the challenge. That will wear me out for the rest of the day.... I did the weigh-in on Tuesday, and that measures all kinds of things besides weight. It seems that I'm a bit dehydrated; I don't drink enough water. Divide your weight in half and that's the number of ounces of water you should drink per day. I'll NEVER get 105 ounces of water down my gullet in a day...that's another reason to lose the weight!

Toastmasters tonight! I'm talking, giving my icebreaker speech. And I'm Grammarian. I'm more nervous about the grammarian function than I am about the speech.

Weighing In 9/9/2018

210.5, down from yesterday's 211.

Fat is now coming off (well, water too). I'm feeling well, since the Diet Center diet provides for eating really good food; chicken 'n' fish...chicken 'n' fish...chicken 'n' fish..., lots of veggies, fresh fruit, and my ever-present bran muffin that keeps my eyes bright, my tail bushy and my bowels moving.

Also, it's FINALLY cooled down outside. This encourages long walks by the river (I'll take one today) as well as coming home to curl up by the fire with a cuppa tea. Not hot chocolate this year (😢), but I have a tea that tastes like minted hot chocolate, which will substitute well. Keeping body heat going in cool weather also takes a bit more energy ... calories ... just to maintain, which helps!

The holidays are fast approaching, too. Halloween is easy: just don't buy the candy, or buy candy with coconut that I will NEVER eat. Thanksgiving. Hmmm. Maybe I'll treat myself to my former gentleman caller's maple-marinated salmon. One day of maple won't kill me. And Tess and Kraig are coming for Christmas; perhaps rock cornish game hens, salad, broccoli (which Tess loves and Kraig hates 😈) and tofu apple dessert for Christmas dinner? I'll figure it out.

Damn ... I didn't post measurements as promised. Well, here they are, as of today, compared to the last set of measurements I took, in July 2017. As you see, I haven't changed much. They'll be up on the first of each month from now on.

Weighing In 9/8/2018

211.0, down from yesterday's 211.25.

I'm losing fat now, and building muscle. Thus, the scale is slowing down. Following the Diet Center program, I generally lose about 2 lb per week on average, or 10 lb per month, which is healthy and sustainable.

According to my trainer, losing 20 lb over 10 weeks will NOT win the challenge at the gym. There are those who do this challenge and lose about 60 lb in 10 weeks. That is NOT sustainable, nor is it healthy. That kind of loss will gain the weight right back. But they win the big bucks. Me, I'll win increased health. So who's the ultimate big winner?

Tuesday, September 4, 2018

Weighing In 9/4/2018

212.75, down from yesterday's 214.75.

I'm back to the weight I was when last I blogged this weight loss. Told ya it wouldn't take me long!

Today is Day 2 of the Reducing Diet. I am not hungry and I certainly am not thirsty. I will take my lunch and snacks to work with me today; lunch will be salmon and salad; snacks will be 2 apples and 2 oranges. Dinner tonight will be chicken and summer squash from the garden. I had a jalapeƱo pepper with that squash last night, also from the garden; those peppers are HOT.

I have water at the office and will drink that. All. Day. Long.

Weighing In 9/2/2018

Day 2 of the Diet Center's Conditioning Diet, and I'm down a pound, 217 down from yesterday's 218. This is, of course, all water. This part of the diet diureses the body. I spent yesterday peeing and will spend today peeing.

Tomorrow starts the Reducing Diet. The Conditioning Diet is a total pig-out; I couldn't eat everything they want me to eat yesterday, and that's fine. Tomorrow, though, starts the 1000-1200 calorie/day thing, and I frankly do get hungry on that. It's all a matter of timing, though; I need to eat throughout the day. The difference is that I eat rabbit food throughout the day; unlimited green leafy veggies, a bit of protein, a couple of pieces of fruit. And, of course, lotsa lotsa water.

Gotta go get started on today's pig-out!

Weighing In 9/1/2018

It's been a year and two days since I last posted here. I've done a decent job of maintaining my weight for that year; I'm at 218 pounds this morning, having pigged out on sushi yesterday (thanks to my brother who came to hang out for a couple of hours and took me to lunch) and pizza and ice cream for the last two days (my brother had nothing to do with those). Last time I posted, on 8/30/2017, I was at 212.75, and I will be there again very soon.

I'm still going to the gym at least once per week, and the same personal trainer is still kicking my butt. I think that's how I am maintaining my weight, quite frankly.

It's time. I'm done maintaining. Today I restart the old Diet Center weight loss routine, and I become answerable to this blog again. It's called "accountability."

The goal is to lose 50 pounds (putting me at 168 lb) by the time I go to Egypt in February. It's the healthy thing to do. Eventually, I'll go down another 20, and that will be my final goal weight. Imagine my weighing less than 150 ... haven't been there in decades.

I'll post measurements as I start the Reducing Diet on the day after tomorrow, then again on the first day of each month.

Weighing In 8/28/2017

Well. It's been awhile, but I've pretty much taken August off. Today I'm 213.5, the same as yesterday's 213.5, and down all of 2 lb from 8/1/2017.

I've maintained my losses, and that is a victory.

Labor Day is this coming weekend. I'm visiting my gentleman caller and will restart the Diet Center plan after that ... which means Wednesday. Actually, it will probably be Thursday, since that's payday!

Weighing In 5/21/2017

Yes, I missed yesterday. My niece graduated from college (summa cum laude, if you please) in the morning and I got into a rush. Rushing does not work well for blogging.

So, to catch up, yesterday I weighed 229.5, up 0.25 lb from Friday's 229.25. Today I weigh 229.5, no change from yesterday.

I LOATHE plateaus. In fact, I think it's time for another egg-grapefruit day tomorrow if this plateau doesn't break on its own. But then, I'm maintaining in the face of eating more than I probably should. I had a friend for dinner on Friday; we had split chicken cooked on the grill and veggies that refused to cook on the grill, and we had a Diet Center® tofu delight for dessert, something I haven't had in eons so I'm calling it a new dish. Yesterday, I ate two apples for breakfast (rushing to the graduation, remember), a salmon filet and salad, the rest of the uncooked veggies, the rest of the tofu delight, a cold grilled bird, and two heaping, and I do mean HEAPING, spoonfuls of peanut butter. That's too much. Today I shall eat less, though I'm still working on the cold bird (I have two left).

Tuesday, May 16, 2017

Weighing In 5/16/2017

Hmph. 231.5, up from yesterday's 229.25

That's 2.25 pounds in the wrong direction.

Yes, I ate foods that are not on the Diet Center plan yesterday; my daughter took me out for a Mother's Day lunch at Sushi X and I had lots (and lots) of sushi, including two X-rolls.

There may also be a water deficiency; I haven't been drinking as I should, so I may be retaining water (I hope). I shall fix that issue today, and I shall fix the eating issue today. Smoothies all the way ... at least until dinner, when I'm going out with daughter and a couple friends to another Japanese restaurant! I'll be at work until at least 1 pm today, so food shouldn't be an issue.

So ... my plan for today is to drink LOTS of water, eat a smoothie for lunch (I already had one for breakfast), and tame the raging beast within with a couple of pre-dinner Wasa crackers. Oh, and walk.

Friday, April 28, 2017

Weighing In 4/28/2017

235.5, down from yesterday's 235.75.

Little bit by little bit, I'm getting to where I need to be. In another 5.75 pounds, I'll be below 230 ... I haven't weighed that little in years.

I'm feeling really quite good about myself. I am succeeding, and all this tonnage is peeling off at a healthy rate. Granted, that healthy rate is frustrating (I want it all gone NOW), but, once gone, it will stay gone. How do I know? Because, first, I'm going to sell or donate all my fat clothes, and I'm not buying more. Second, if and when the weight does begin to creep back up (as it very well may, and that's not a defeat), I will simply hit the reset button by going back on the Diet Center's reducing diet. That's easy to do. I'll give myself a 10-pound leeway; if I gain 10.25 pounds above that 139-pound goal I set, I will immediately, and I do mean IMMEDIATELY, go back on the reducing diet and get rid of it.

I can do this. I have a plan. All I need to do is stick to my plan.

All sights are set on 229.75 pounds, which is my next mini-goal weight.

Tuesday, April 11, 2017

Weighing In 4/11/2017

239.75, down from yesterday's 241.25.

YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!! All that recent plateauing has fallen off the cliff!!!!!!!

And I'm below 240!! It's time for my mani/pedi, and I've donated today to my husband's memorial fund at the American Lung Association!!

From the start, I've lost 16.5 lb, and in one week I'm down 3 lb. I'm doing well. Just gotta keep it up!

Actually, losing the weight isn't the hard part; it's keeping it off where things get really challenging. It's so easy to slide right back into the old habits. So I have a strategy for that. I'll give myself a 10-lb buffer zone; if I get above that 10-lb limit, I will go right back on the reducing diet and take it right off. In other words, this is the last time I'll work to lose 100+ lb at a stretch.

My goal is 139 lb. I started at 258 lb. That will be a total loss of 119 lb. I can obviously do that. If I ever get above 150 again, I'm back on the reducing diet. That's it.

And  y'know ... this blog keeps me accountable. That's what is missing in the book-based diets out there: accountability. Everyone is so sensitive about their weight. We just need to plough through and go public and state the weight and fix it then keep it fixed. It's not that hard, and we food addicts, on the Diet Center program, can stay food addicts; we just change the tenor of the addiction.
